Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a powerful tool for working with people who are trying to overcome problems. This brief beginners’ course will provide a foundation for recovery housing owners, operators, staff and volunteers to understand MI and begin practicing basic skills that can be used immediately and then built upon over time.

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to do the following:

  1. Explain what motivational interviewing is.

  2. Explain the appropriate relationship between the person using MI and the person needing help.

  3. Identify the four fundamental processes of MI

  4. Explain the differences between open-ended questions and closed questions and how they fit with MI.

  5. Explain what is meant by “change talk” and how it can be used effectively by people trained in MI.

  6. Explain how MI can be used in our everyday lives as well as with our work with people in recovery.
